2025 Call for Applications for
International Social Epidemiology Society Awards

We are excited to announce a call for awards of the International Social Epidemiology Society, which will recognize and celebrate the exceptional work of doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and early career researchers in the field of social epidemiology. These awards aim to identify rising stars in the field and provide meaningful distinctions to highlight innovative contributions to social epidemiology research, particularly those with a focus on policy implications, equity, translation of research, and new methodological approaches for study of the social determinants of health.  Moreover, these awards are designed to honor the next generation of social epidemiologists whose research promises to impact policy, practice, and the public health field.

Award Categories

1. Early Career Researchers:

  • Innovative Concepts or Methods in Social Epidemiology Award
    Recognizes innovative and novel conceptual or methodological research contributions to the field of social epidemiology. This award celebrates work that introduces groundbreaking ideas, frameworks, or methods that can advance understanding of structural and social determinants of health.

  • Equity Translation in Social Epidemiology Award
    Celebrates early-career research that demonstrates a clear and actionable translation of social epidemiology findings into policy or practice, with a focus on equity and improving public health outcomes for historically marginalized communities.

     

2. Postdoctoral Fellows:

  • Outstanding Promise in Social Epidemiology Award
    Recognizes the potential for future success in the field of social epidemiology. This award honors postdoctoral fellows whose work exhibits high promise, creativity, and the potential for meaningful research contributions to the academic and/or public health practice communities.

     

3. Doctoral Students:

  • Rising Star in Social Epidemiology Award
    This award recognizes a doctoral student's outstanding research paper in social epidemiology. The research should demonstrate strong potential in advancing research in social epidemiology, such as through innovation in concepts or methods on the social determinants of health.

Application Process

Early Career Researcher Awards:
Eligibility: Researchers working in academia, government or the private sector are eligible and as of April 30, 2025 are within 7 years of conferral of their PhD degree in epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, or a related field.

Application documents:

  • Applicants must submit a research paper (as first or senior author); the paper must have been published or accepted for publication no more than 1 year prior to April 30, 2025.

  • Brief personal statement (max. 500 words) describing how applicant's work aligns with award category

  • CV  

  • One-page letter of recommendation from senior colleague or mentor, explicitly addressing why applicant should receive the award

  • If applying for more than one award, a separate application is required for each.

  • All submitted documents must be in pdf format.

Postdoctoral Fellow Award:
Eligibility: Researchers working as postdocs in academia, government or the private sector are eligible and as of April 30, 2025 are within 3 years of conferral of their PhD degree in epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, or a related field.

Application documents:

  • Applicants must submit a research paper (as first author); the paper must have been published or accepted for publication no more than 1 year prior to April 30, 2025.

  • Brief personal statement (max. 500 words) describing how applicant's work aligns with the award category.

  • One-page letter of recommendation from senior colleague or mentor, explicitly addressing why applicant should receive the award

  • All submitted documents must be in pdf format.

Doctoral Student Award:
Eligibility: Students who as of April 30, 2025 are enrolled in a PhD degree program in epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, or a related field.

Application documents:

  • Applicants must submit a first-authored research paper; the paper must have been published or accepted for publication no more than 1 year prior to April 30, 2025.

  • Brief personal statement (max. 500 words) describing role that applicant played in the paper and the contribution of this work to the field.

  • One-page letter of recommendation from faculty advisor or research mentor that describes the student’s potential and why the student should receive the award.

  • All submitted documents must be in pdf format.

Award Selection Criteria:

  • Innovation and Novelty (for Innovative Concepts or Methods in Social Epidemiology Award): The degree to which the research introduces new concepts, methodologies, or policy implications to the field.

  • Equity and Social Justice (for Equity Translation in Social Epidemiology Award): How well the research addresses or contributes to equity, particularly in marginalized or underserved communities.

  • Potential for Future Impact (for all awards): Evidence of the applicant’s potential to become a leading figure in the field of social epidemiology.

  • Quality of Research (for all awards): Rigorous, evidence-based research that contributes meaningfully to the field of social epidemiology.

  • Letter of Recommendation (for all awards): Strong and enthusiastic endorsement of applicant’s suitability that provides concrete examples of applicant’s achievements, suitability for the award, and future potential.
